Frequently Asked Questions

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise, developed by Joseph Pilates, which emphasizes the balanced development of the body through strength, flexibility and awareness in order to support efficient and graceful movement.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable workout clothing that moves with you. Fitted clothing is best since it helps the instructor see the body moving. Shoes are discouraged as Pilates is done barefoot but you can wear socks if it is more comfortable for you. Your bare feet will give you the best grip and sensory awareness for most of the exercises.

Will I lose weight?

Although Pilates is not a weight loss program, you will be building and toning your muscles which will burn calories. Your body will change shape with regular classes or sessions and even if the numbers on the scale don’t represent overall weight loss, you will have the appearance of a leaner body. Most importantly, the movement principles you will learn will allow you to move more efficiently and freely in your other activities outside the studio which will in turn cause you to want to be more active and thoughtful about food choices!

Is Pilates for guys?

Absolutely! Sometimes it is forgotten that the Pilates method was developed by a man. Many professional male athletes and teams are embracing Pilates in their specific training programs.

What if I am new?

If you are brand new to using the Pilates machines, we suggest that you take advantage of our special offer, 3 Private Sessions for $99. These sessions will help you get a feel for our style and familiarize yourself with the equipment.

What if I need to cancel a class?

We ask that you cancel 24 hours in advance for classes and Private sessions. This will allow another person to take advantage of that spot and prevent you from being charged for a service you aren’t using – thank you!

What if classes are full?

If class is full, there is an option to sign up on a wait list. Should someone need to cancel their spot in the class you will be notified that you’ve been added to the list.

What if I haven’t worked out in a long time?

All clients are encouraged to work at their own pace. In class, we offer modifications to many exercises to make the class beneficial and safe for everyone. Classes are small and comfortable and if you need to take a break you can resume when you are ready. If you have specific limitations or health concerns we encourage you to consider private sessions.

What if I have back issues?

Pilates is often just the right remedy for many back issues although we ask that you have a doctor’s note if you have a significant issue with your spine.

What if I am pregnant?

As long as you are cleared by your doctor to exercise, Pilates is a great way to prepare your body for the demands of delivery and having a small child. There are many modifications that allow women to practice Pilates through all 3 trimesters of pregnancy.

What if I am late to class?

For your own safety and as a courtesy to others, we do not allow people to join the class who are more than 10 minutes late. We know schedules can get harried, but please try to arrive for class on time.
